Sometimes the only way to stop the noise in your head is to leave it behind―at least for a while. This is a true story about a road trip, but this is no travel log.

On some level, I think I was anticipating some navel gazing, but Ms Lynn combined some of her thoughts about life with comments about her son’s and her reactions to their trip, observations about places they visited, and activities and people they experienced. Ms. Lynn writes well. I think the thing she most discovered about herself on this journey is that the things we tend to overlook, when our lives are busy, can be the things that make life most worthwhile.
While I had no desire to hike the Grand Canyon with the two of them or to watch her son hunt for lizards, I remembered the soothing qualities of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans, the joys of tent camping in my younger days, cozy B & Bs after days on the road. I would join her for a scotch on the rocks, however. After reading this memoir, I feel refreshed.

I’ve had inquiries about the route we took so here it is. This is the general route, but I tried to avoid highways and go for the back roads through small towns whenever possible. Although we were always stopping at museums, zoos, safari parks, aquariums, and all types of roadside amusements, the book doesn’t go into detail about those places.
The book is not a travel log, but you will find links below for many of the places we visited.
Many people have asked, did we see this place or that place. The US is a big place and only three months traveling it is the fast track. I had to pick and choose what places and activities would be appealing to both of us and that had a lot to do with the route I had to take to get around the US in that time.
Hostels are great places to stay if you’re interested in meeting fellow travelers. People are friendly, helpful and always have interesting stories! You can also make your own dinner eliminating the cost or inconvenience of always going out for food. And if you’re a picky eater who prefers more veggies to fast food, this is the way to go.
Cheap motels? It’s simple. I was on a budget but also it was just a place to stay the night. Plus, many of the small towns didn’t have chain motels. I also found it quite amusing and entertaining. On the days we stayed longer than one night, I usually opted for an Econo Lodge (now part of Choice Hotels) if I could find one. They were cheap and always clean.
I wanted to see at least some small part of as many states as possible and experience (and have my son get a roadside education) in many different places, people and activities common to that state.
We did a lot things we didn’t typically do at home. For instance: horseback riding in Durango, fishing in Montana, gem-hunting in New Mexico, hiking in the Grand Canyon, theater and museums in New York City, historic sites in Boston and Washington DC. All that in addition to lots of camping, caves, zoos, etc. Yet, there were so many things for which we didn’t have time. Three months around the US is the fast track!
